The 2010/11 Ashes series in Australia began in Brisbane at The Gabba. Australia were favourites to win the series and regain the Ashes after losing 2-1 in England in 2009.

Although a proven run scorer since his 2006 debut, and at age 25 the second youngest player to reach 4000 test runs after Sachin Tendulkar, Alastair Cook arrived in Australia under a fair bit of scrutiny. He had averaged just 26 from his previous 10 innings and the English press had their teeth bared, writing that he should be replaced as opener.

Cook was equal to the pressure. He knew that if he trusted in his technique the runs would come. He didn't have to wait long, making 67 as England won the toss and elected to bat. They scored 260 all out and Australia gained a healthy lead with 481 in reply.

The second England innings set the tone for the series. England captain Andrew Strauss made 110 as England scored 188 for the first wicket. Cook was joined by Jonathan Trott for an unbeaten partnership of 329. Cook recorded his first double-century in first-class cricket, finishing on 235 not out, and Trott scored 135 not out before England declared on 517–1. Cook's 235* overtook the great Don Bradman's record score at the ground.

The match was drawn but the England batters had put down a marker to say they were ready to bat long and that it would take a special spell of bowling to get them out. England won the series 3-1 with Cook piling up 766 runs and Jonathan Trott 445. It was England's first Ashes win in Australia since 1987 and they have lost the 3 series played in Australia since. It was a monumental achievement by a strong England test team that reached number 1 in the rankings.

The Finished Product

Each Sporting Moment is designed by hand with pen and paper. The image is turned into a digital file for cutting by CNC machine using a 9mm high density fibre board which is black throughout and specially designed for finely detailed cutting work.

I make three sizes of sculpture - 60cm, 75cm and 90cm as measured by the longest side. Some of the sculptures are only available in the larger sizes due to the intricacy of the design.

Packaging

Each sculpture is ergonomically packaged in its own wooden surround to arrive in perfect condition. Opening your package is simple; remove outer card board and use a palette knife to slide between the wood layers and pop open the staples.

Hanging

Hanging your sculpture is very simple. They are designed to rest on two picture nails provided. Hold the sculpture in place and use a pencil to mark where you want to put the nails, near the top towards the left and right.

The sculptures are made from high density fibre board, which is strong and durable. However, they are still susceptible to damage if handled roughly, so it is important to hold them with carefully with two hands when unpacking and hanging.

How do I install the sculpture on my wall?

Installation is simple: Two nails are included in the packaging. Hold the sculpture up to the wall. Mark with a pencil where you want the nails, one on each side towards the top. Hammer in the nails leaving a cm sticking out and hang the sculpture.

Is the packaging environmentally friendly?

The packaging uses the waste from the cutting process to protect the sculpture, and is then sandwiched between two thin mdf boards and wrapped in cardboard. The packaging is plastic free and the mdf boards are made from recycled wood shavings so there is no need to cut down any new trees to make the material. We recommend to keep the packaging as it's the safest way to transport your sculpture should you ever need to move it.
