No British man had won Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936. Tim Henman had come closest to the title, losing in four semifinals. That changed with the arrival of Scottish tennis legend Andy Murray.

He made a stellar senior tournament debut in 2005 as an 18 yr old, reaching the third round but losing in five sets against no. 18 seed David Nalbandian.

For the next few years Murray was an exciting prospect at the tournament but had to manage injuries and results didn’t go his way.

In 2012 he reached the final, against six time winner Roger Federer. Murray took the first set 6-4 but Federer raised his level to win the next three, equaling Pete Sampras’ record of seven Wimbledon titles.

The defeat spurred Murray on to achieve more. He beat Federer to win gold at the London 2012 Olympic gold and won his first grand slam at the US open a few months later.

At Wimbledon 2013 Murray was hotly tipped to go one step further and lift the trophy. The draw opened up nicely for him with Federer and Nadal both knocked out in the early rounds. Murray eased through the opening matches but came up against a formidable quarter final opponent in Fernando Verdasco. Murray lost the first two sets before finding a way back in to the match. Murray dominated in the third set and went to win in five sets.

The Semi Final against big serving Jerzy Janowicz was a different challenge. Murray lost a first set tie break before going on to win in four.

The nation held its breath for the final against Novak Djokovic which was a predictably tight affair. The Serb had beaten Murray in the Australian open final in January, but on the grass of SW19 Murray had a huge home crowd advantage. It was a very hot day and the long baseline rallies were draining for both players. Murray held his nerve on the crucial points to win in three sets, dropping to his knees with joy and relief before climbing up to the players box to celebrate with his family.

Murray won his third and final grand slam to date at Wimbledon in 2016 and successfully defended his Olympic title in the same year.

The Finished Product

Each Sporting Moment is designed by hand with pen and paper. The image is turned into a digital file for cutting by CNC machine using a 9mm high density fibre board which is black throughout and specially designed for finely detailed cutting work.

I make three sizes of sculpture - 60cm, 75cm and 90cm as measured by the longest side. Some of the sculptures are only available in the larger sizes due to the intricacy of the design.

Hanging your sculpture is very simple. They are designed to rest on two picture nails provided. Hold the sculpture in place and use a pencil to mark where you want to put the nails, near the top towards the left and right.
